Sizes for wood coffins

Some people prefer to have a coffin built or build one him/herself.

Some people prefer to have a coffin built or build one him/herself. The following information has been provided by Chuck Lakin who builds coffins to order which offers guide lines. The maximum height for coffins at Cedar brook Burial Ground is tweny four inches.

The standard funeral home coffin measures (inside) 6 feet 2 inches long, 22 1/2 inches wide and 12 inches deep.

I make my coffins four inches longer than the person is tall, twenty two and one half inches wide and thirteen and one half inches deep. Vaults are only thirty inches wide, which limits the width of a coffin if the person is being buried in a conventional cemetery.

Since I make my coffins to fit I get measurements of the person’s height, width at the shoulders and their depth measured while the person is lying down. I add four inches to the height, two inches to the width and one and one half to two inches to the depth. I have made a few oversize coffins.
